Fort Wetherill in Jamestown Rhode Island is probably one of the most popular dive training sites in southern New England.  Located on the southeastern shores of Conanicut Island, it overlooks the east passage of Narragansett Bay and Newport Harbor.  It's two coves offer hard sandy bottoms and plenty of rocky areas to explore which make it an ideal location for dive training.

 Fort Wetherill left cove

The left cove, seen above, has a rocky entry and about a 10 foot drop off once you get past the rocks.  Straight out from the beach is 20 feet of water and a hard sandy bottom.  If you enter the water and head left, the cove is shallow and has a rocky shoreline beginners can explore.  Heading right you can follow the rocks to over 40 feet.   If you continue along you will eventually come to the end of the peninsula which separates the two coves.  The there is a gap between the peninsula and a small rock island beyond the gap.   Deep diving to about 100' can be found out past the island.

 Fort Wetherill left cove

The right cove has a steep boat launch on the left and a small pebble beach.  A grassy area overlooks the beach and makes a great place to gear up or for spectators to throw out a blanket.  The entry is easy and shallow, you will see eel grass close in to shore followed by a gradual sloping hard sandy bottom.  You can follow the rock line on the left side of the cove out to about 35' with overhangs and rock walls.

Fort Wetherill Boat Launch

Looking out from the boat launch across the cove toward the right is another rocky beach.  Take the last right turn as you approach the parking lot and follow the road to the upper parking lot.  It's quite a hike down the side of the cliff to get to the beach so be careful.  From the beach you can follow a vertical wall to about 50' max if you go to the right.  You can also swim across to the island for a deep dive.

The wide range of depths and easy access is what make Ft. Wetherill such a great dive site.
